Tasting Notes
Robert KarlssonQuite a bit of restless clean smoke. Stingy. Lime? A bit perfumed. Hugely white-peppery, clean smoky, coastal. Salty seaweed. Quite intense. Maltier with water.
Rich Howardsmoldering wood on the nose, with burnt bread, toasted cherry torte, warm caramel, hints of orange creme on the tail. the palate is likewise sweet and smoky, with charred wood, cherry jam on heavily toasted bread, lightly salted caramels, just a bit spicy on the finish with a dash of salt and pepper. a drop of water adds some medicinal notes, gauze, hints of chocolate-covered cherries and raspberry reduction. the palate is quite sweet on spicy raspberry jam, with plenty of sea salt and charred wood on the finish, still a dash of pepper. summary: smoky wood, sea salt and spicy berry reduction. delicious as bottled, but takes water well. [tasted blind for the 2011 Awards]
Oliver KlimekColour: Dark gold - Nose: Cold fireplace, raisins, orange zest, honey, fudge, sticking one's nose into a dusty old cupboard, hints pf pepper. - Palate: Medium peat, honey, raisins, caramel, cloves, hints of nutmeg and pepper. - Finish: Long, fruity and smoky. - Overall: The mild sherry influence adds a nice fruity and sweet twist to this Caol Ila. Water is not really needed here.
